The emerging notion of territorial development is, by definition, multidimensional and presents itself as useful to the elaboration of alternatives and strategies for development in rural and urban spaces. This development seeks both to disallow the degradation of ecosystems as well as the widening of social inequalities. The present article aims to problematize the natural dimension in the territorial approach to development and to provide elements that can help in making diagnoses and provide support to the surveying of territorial development scenarios. To achieve this objective, a literature review was performed and four conceptual categories were mobilized: geosites and geological heritage that can be used as guidelines for the promotion of territorial development; agroecosystems as the main expression of sustainable development; urban environmental vulnerability as a way to ensure the right to the city, quality of life and well-being of urban populations; the basket of territorial goods and services as a theoretical and methodological focus to guiding processes of valuation of territorial resources and assets that contribute to development. In conclusion, isolating the natural dimension leads to increased complexity, and dividing it into the categories presented can facilitate the analysis by providing indicators/variables in a way that subsidizes the performance of diagnoses and surveying of scenarios that take into consideration the natural dimension of territorial development.
