Sustainability of the municipality of João Pessoa: an application of the barometer of sustainability

Abstract

Nowadays, the damage caused upon natural environment together with the demands of economic growth and the ravage of natural resources are getting a conspicuous position as subject for international discussions, giving rise to a new concept of sustainable development, focused on the balance between the use of natural resources, economic growth and wealth sharing. In the attempt to classify and allow parametric analysis concerning sustainable development, several kinds of methodology have been created and employed. So, the aim of this article is to investigate the sustainable conditions of the municipal district of João Pessoa in the state of Paraíba, according to the employment of a resource called “Barometer of Sustainability”. In this process, we included secondary data from different origins applying quantitative and qualitative views. The result showed that the sustainability of the district of João Pessoa is positioned on an intermediary level between the established patterns of sustainability and unsustainability.
