Abstract

The modernization of agriculture resulted in substantial changes in the Brazilian rural environment. In this context, the agriculture of Bahia state, Brazil, has undergone many transformations from the 1970s onwards, however the consolidation of the productivist model in Bahia occurred with a delay, in the late 1980s and early 1990s. The referred process promoted a reorganization in Bahia agricultural sector with several effects. Thus, it is analyzed the production structure and the sources of growth, taking in account groups of economic activity in the agricultural and livestock sector of Bahia, from 1995 and 2006, by using measures of specialization, regional measures and the shift-share model, to describe of the spatial and structural behavior of agricultural activity in the state. The results present a diversified agricultural and livestock sector but regionally polarized. The structural component is positive, revealing regional specialization in dynamic sectors. On the other hand, the differential components are negative for most regions, revealing an absence of locational advantages in different microregions in Bahia.
