Abstract

The objective of this paper is to discuss the action of the state in the transportation sector through public policies formulated by the Empresa Brasileira de Planejamento de Transporte (Geipot) between 1965 and 2001. The economic history of Geipot will be analyzed in this paper into five topics. Initially will be highlighted Geipot creation and publication of the first projects during the 1960s. The second topic discusses the company's performance during the 1970s, when there was enlargement of the functions of planning in Brazil. The third topic covers the years 1980 and discusses two different times: the continuation and cooling of public policy. The 1990s, with strong fiscal adjustment and dismantling of planning instruments, impacting directly on Geipot, will be discussed in the fourth item. Finally, the text provides brief final considerations with a discussion of the relationship between state, planning and public policy for transport.
